Joyce Presents Kenston Middle School with Congressional Proclamations to Honor Purple Star Designation

CHAGRIN FALLS – Today, Congressman Dave Joyce (OH-14) presented three Congressional Proclamations to recognize Kenston Middle School and its staff for achieving the Purple Star Award. This important award recognizes schools that show a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military, helping military families know which schools are best equipped to help their children succeed. Specifically, Dave presented a Congressional Proclamation to Kenston Middle School Principal Patricia Brockway and to the school’s two military student liaisons, Brent Barr, who teaches Social Studies, and Jessica McHugh, who teaches English Language and Art. Afterwards, Dave met with students of military families.

 

“It was an honor to go to Kenston Middle School today and recognize all they do to support the military families in our community,” said Dave. “Nearly 34,000 students across the Buckeye State are from military families. Many of those children have to overcome the challenges related to frequent moves and adjusting to new schools. I applaud all that Mr. Barr and Mrs. McHugh do to help these students and ensure they have the support they need to succeed. Kenston Middle School’s Purple Star Award is well deserved.”

 

“At Kenston, we have the deepest admiration for those serving in the military and protecting the freedoms that we enjoy every day,” said Superintendent Nancy Santilli. “The Purple Star designation recognizes our commitment to serving and supporting our local military families and their students.”

 

The Ohio Department of Education began awarding schools with the Purple Star Award four years ago to honor their commitment to both military students and families. The Purple Star Advisory Board, formed by the Ohio departments of Education, Higher Education, Veterans Services and the Adjutant General, helps decide a school’s eligibility for the award. In order to be recognized, schools must fulfill a set of requirements listed by the Ohio Department of Education including:

  • designating a staff point of contact to serve as a liaison for military students and families
  • making special considerations for military students and families
  • dedicating a page on the school’s website featuring resources for military families
