Congressman Joyce Votes to Secure American Elections
WASHINGTON D.C. – Yesterday, Congressman Dave Joyce (OH-14) voted in favor of the SAVE America Act to protect election integrity. This legislation will require voters to present a valid physical photo ID to vote in person and require states to take proactive steps to ensure only U.S. citizens are registered to vote in federal elections. This legislation now heads to the Senate for consideration.
“Requiring voter ID in federal elections isn’t controversial; it’s common sense. Americans support it, and Congress is answering that call. Ohio has proven that secure, transparent elections are achievable, and there’s no excuse for other states to settle for less,” said Congressman Joyce. “The legislation I supported tonight takes critical steps to prevent voter fraud and ensure our voter rolls only contain U.S. citizens, while also taking steps to ensure individuals with name discrepancies, like married women, can seamlessly participate in our elections. This legislation is a major step in ensuring secure elections, and I was proud to see it pass the House.”
Background:
This bill amends the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 to require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship (DPOC) to register to vote and place a ballot in federal elections. It establishes a uniform federal standard for acceptable proof, including U.S. passports, REAL ID-compliant identification showing citizenship, certain military records, and other government-issued photo IDs accompanied by birth certificates, naturalization records, or similar documents. States would be prohibited from registering individuals for federal elections unless this proof is provided, regardless of whether registration occurs at a motor-voter agency, by mail, or through another method.
