WASHINGTON, D.C. - Airports in Cuyahoga and Summit counties were among 405 airports around the country that were awarded more than $1.2 billion in airport safety and infrastructure grants by the Federal Aviation Administration on Tuesday, according to an announcement from U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao.

Cuyahoga County Airport got $5,610,957 through the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program., to help the airport with critical infrastructure projects such as runways and taxiways as well as airport signage, lighting and markings. Akron Fulton International Airport got $3,732,938 to rehabilitate runways and reconstruct runway lighting, Chao announced.

“Ohio’s airports have suffered significantly as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and this federal support will provide them with the resources necessary to complete critical maintenance and infrastructure projects,” said a statement from Bainbridge Township Republican Rep. Dave Joyce. “I look forward to having these tax dollars returned to Northeast Ohio and seeing the positive impact they have not only on the communities in Cuyahoga County, but also the surrounding areas in Northeast Ohio that rely on this airport for transportation.”
